As the class began to plan for the Roald Dahl play, they were given the chance to preview the script and give a response. The response helped the teacher to cast each student as a role in the play. The students were asked to reflect on their experience with plays that they have performed in the past and request specific roles. In the request section, the student needed to explain why they wanted the role.
I think this is an excellent way to get the students involved in the play and interested in different character roles. They needed to not only identify who the characters were, but have some reasons why they would be a good actor/actress to play the part. Incorporating reading and writing in the planning stages of the play will help the student to feel like they have a say in how the performance comes together.
